Questions for Fayla
When did you start writing?
I've been making up stories as long as I can remember. Even before I could read, I'd create my own stories from the pictures in children's books. I studied my craft for years before embarking on the publishing journey. I published my first book in 2013, and I'm still learning.
What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Read, read, and read some more. Then write, write, and write some more. I cannot stress that enough. So many want to skip studying their craft. They jump into publishing without doing the necessary work beforehand. Learn all you can about writing, and if you can't "not write", then keep going and don't ever quit. Also, you must make it a priority, even when others don't understand.Trust me, there will always be something interfering with your writing deadlines. Deadlines are important, not only for your writing, but for your publishing and marketing responsibilities, also. There will always be those who question or demean your writing life, as if it's a hobby, so it need not be a priority. Some will get offended if you put it on your priority list, but if you don't set that precedent early on, it'll be even harder for others to understand later. Imagine someone expecting you to skip work because they want you to do something. Would you do that? You must consider writing as a set-in-stone schedule that you shouldn't break, unless you're taking a vacation, sick day, or there's an emergency. Where do you get your ideas?
My first response? God gives them to me. However, Neil Gaiman answered this question so well, I'll just leave his quote here to add to my response: "You get ideas from daydreaming. You get ideas from being bored. You get ideas all the time. The only difference between writers and other people is we notice when we're doing it." ~Neil Gaiman
What’s the best part of being a writer?
Apart from meeting and communicating with my readers, I'd have to say just watching the story unfold. I am a "by-the-seat-of-my -pants writer" so I write as I go. Like my readers, I enjoy discovering what will happen through the pages. I've heard some authors advise that you should always know how the story ends as you begin to write. While I have some idea of the overall story line, I don't always know how it will wrap up. It's exciting to come to the end of the story and feel just as surprised as my readers when I get there. This keeps the writing process fresh and exciting for me throughout the story. If it's exciting for me, it'll be exciting for the right audience.
What’s the most difficult part of being a writer?
It's really the isolation that proves most difficult. It's not so much that I isolate myself on purpose, but the writing journey itself demands a specific isolation. While I can share my journey with others at times, there's still so much of the journey I must travel alone. Other writers might understand parts of the journey, but every story is different, and every writer's life path is different, too, so the challenges aren't always the same. This is why I'm an advocate of praying and reading God's Word before typing even one word on the page. I must walk this journey with Jesus every day, so I'll never need to feel alone. If anyone knows what it means to be a creator and storyteller, it is the Master Creator and Storyteller. And if anyone knows what it means to be isolated, it's Him. It's also important to spend time with other authors. If you're interested in writing, I include information about author groups and events on the Aspiring Authors page.
How do you deal with writer’s block?
First I pray, then I read. This isn't to sound pious. I read the Bible, but I also read other author's books. I read a lot because reading makes me a better writer. That may soundsimple, but that's because it is. Often, within a few minutes, I am inspired to create again. For me, writer's block is usually discouragement and/or a lack of inspiration, so I am both encouraged and inspired after praying and reading. It also helps if I just begin. I can avoid the mental block of staring at a blank page by writing anything that comes to mind. This helps to wake up my brain and motivate my creative energy.
What kind of speaking do you do?
I love to speak to women or young ladies at church functions, but I am also available for educational events such as graduations, etc. I enjoy speaking at literary events, too, and I can be available to sign books at all speaking engagements. I am versatile, so if you're unsure if my speaking platform will work for you, we can communicate about it through email. For more information, or to request a consideration for your event, you can visit my Media Kit page or email media@faylaott.com.
Can you help me with my book(s)?
As much as I'd love to help people, I just don't have the time required to help other authors with their projects. However, I've compiled some helpful links and information for authors on the Aspiring Authors page. Included are some wonderful resources, whether you're more experienced or just starting out.
Do you take book suggestions or ideas?
No. As an author, I have more ideas than I have time to write, so I don't really need suggestions. That's not to say your idea isn't a good one, but since it's your idea, chances are you're probably the one who needs to write it.
Do you do any ghostwriting (or any writing) for others?
I can't write anyone's book or story ideas for the same reason I can't help anyone write. I just don't have the time necessary to take on such a project. Any time I have for writing must go toward my own work.
